Official outlook
EIA's monthly forecast for your region, adjusted to your area's typical difference from it.
How this works
Every day we pull the latest weekly average retail prices for gasoline and diesel from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for your metro, state, or region, along with EIA's daily wholesale gasoline and diesel prices, crude oil, and its official monthly price outlook.
The prediction is a simple, transparent estimate: recent momentum in your area's price, the direction wholesale gasoline has moved over the last couple of weeks (pump prices usually follow with a short lag), and — further out — EIA's monthly forecast for your region. The recommendation follows the predicted direction: if prices look set to rise, fill up now; if they look set to fall, wait if you can. When they look steady, we say fill up now only if today's price is near the low of the last 90 days in your area.
Tip: station prices often creep up ahead of the weekend; early-week fill-ups tend to be a little cheaper. Shop around too — the spread between the cheapest and priciest station in town is usually bigger than any day-to-day move. Midgrade and premium move with regular almost cent for cent, so the same advice applies; their estimated prices sit under Today.
